Hand Surgeon on the Upper West Side, Manhattan

When your hand, wrist or elbow stops cooperating, everyday Manhattan life gets harder fast: typing at work, carrying groceries up the stairs, holding a subway pole. Our Upper West Side office at 209 W 96th Street brings New York Hand & Orthopedic Surgery to patients in Manhattan, so you can see a hand and upper extremity specialist without crossing the river to Brooklyn or New Jersey.

Our practice focuses on the hand, wrist and elbow, from first-time evaluation through nonsurgical treatment and, when it's needed, surgery. Many of our Manhattan patients are professionals, performers and active adults whose work depends on fine hand control, and we plan your care around how you actually use your hands.

Upper West Side Hand Surgeon FAQs

Do I need a referral to see a hand surgeon in Manhattan?

Some insurance plans require a referral and others don't. Check your plan before your visit, and if a referral letter is required, bring it with you along with your ID and insurance information.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Bring a driver's license or valid ID, your insurance information, any referral letter your plan requires, a list of your medications, and any reports, X-rays, MRIs or CT scans related to your hand, wrist or elbow.

Can I be seen here if I'm a dancer or performer?

Yes. Dr. Patel has cared for performers as an in-house physician for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Martha Graham Dance School, and we can tailor your treatment plan to the demands of your work.

Will I need surgery for my hand pain?

Not every hand or wrist problem needs surgery. Many conditions improve with splinting, therapy, injections or activity changes. Your surgeon can review your symptoms and imaging and discuss which options fit your situation.
